How it is worked out

Yearly salary income = monthly gross × 12 + festival bonuses. One third of it (up to Tk 4,50,000) is exempt. The rest, plus any other income, is taxable income. The first part of taxable income is the tax-free threshold; the part above it is taxed band by band.

The exempt part of salary

Under the Income Tax Act 2023, one third of an employee's salary income or Tk 4,50,000, whichever is lower, is exempt. There are no separate exemptions for house rent or medical allowance; they are inside this one.

Rates for the 2026-27 income year

The tax-free threshold is Tk 4,00,000 for general taxpayers; Tk 4,50,000 for women and people aged 65 or over; Tk 5,25,000 for persons with disabilities and third-gender taxpayers; and Tk 5,50,000 for gazetted war-wounded freedom fighters and July warriors. Above it: 10% on the next Tk 3,00,000, 15% on the next Tk 4,00,000, 20% on the next Tk 5,00,000, 25% on the next Tk 20,00,000, and 30% on the rest.

Minimum tax

Once taxable income is above the threshold, a minimum tax applies even if the bands give less: Tk 5,000 in Dhaka and Chattogram city corporations, Tk 4,000 in other city corporations, and Tk 3,000 elsewhere.

Investing lowers your tax

Investments in approved schemes, such as savings certificates, DPS, life insurance and your own provident fund contribution, earn a tax rebate. This calculator leaves the rebate out, so with such investments your real tax may be lower. Check the rebate rate and limit in the NBR's guidance when you file.

Why your employer deducts tax every month

Employers divide the estimated yearly tax by twelve, deduct it from each month's pay and pay it to the government. Your return works out the real tax at the end of the year, and any excess is adjusted. Keep the tax deduction certificate your employer gives you.

This is an estimate, not tax or legal advice. Rates follow the Finance Act 2026 for the 2026-27 income year. Your own situation may change the figure. Check with the NBR website or a tax lawyer before filing.
